It’s that time again! Another action packed steam excursion, smell that famous smoke, hear the whistle of the steam locomotive and see the steam! Get a bunch of friends together, the family, or get a group of workmates together for a fantastic day out to the sunny Waikato township of Matamata. Relive the days of steam and enjoy the scenery and hospitality this lovely town has to offer. With demand for another heritage steam excursion, the Railway Enthusiasts Society, along with the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, in Waiuku and the Mainline Steam Trust are pleased to announce this mainline steam hauled excursion behind Ja 1275 and the Glenbrook Vintage Railway’s restored heritage carriages. A range of interesting and fun side tours will make your day more memorable during our stopover in Matamata. Visit the ‘Hobbiton” movie set and enjoy a well-catered lunch, or visit the Firth Tower museum, or visit one of NZ’s leading Thoroughbred Stud Farms; Rich Hill Stud, complete with a Stallion Parade, or how about free time in Matamata to enjoy a picnic styled lunch and enjoy the sights. The choice is yours!!! These side tour options are a must include to any passenger or group booking on this excursion; they offer an unforgettable experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity for everyone. So please decide carefully and wisely as to which option you would like to visit.
With a planned departure from Glenbrook at 7:00am our train will travel south to Hamilton with a passenger stop at Pukekohe at 7:30am. At Hamilton at 9:30am, passengers will be treated to a morning tea while the locomotive takes on water. Heading east from Hamilton the train will travel through the farming countryside of the Waikato. With photo stops and water stops en route, our train is timed to arrive in Matamata at 12:00pm. Our return departure is scheduled for 4:30pm with a 40 minute dinner break scheduled at Hamilton Railway Station. With a passenger drop off at Pukekohe at 9pm, our return journey will see us arrive at Glenbrook at 9:30pm where our service will terminate. Passengers needing to get to Pukekohe Railway Station will need to catch an Auckland Commuter service from Papakura; scheduled to arrive before the excursion departs, and depart shortly after our arrival. Times printed here at subject to change and confirmation when the tickets are mailed out.
Full trip details and confirmed departure / arrival times will be mailed out approx. 7 days prior to the excursion’s departure date. A barbeque evening meal can be ordered which will be served at the Hamilton Railway Station. Soft drinks, Snacks, Water, Tea’s & Coffee’s will be available en route on the train. Lunch, (unless otherwise specified) will be passengers own responsibility. There are plenty of Food bars, Cafes, and shops in the township of Matamata. There is plenty of free, safe parking available at Glenbrook Station for passengers.
Arrival Option 1:
Travel to Matamata, then transfer to a bus which will take you out to the “Hobbiton” movie set. Enjoy a beautifully prepared lunch at the Shires Rest Restaurant then experience the tour of the famous movie set of Peter Jackson’s. Then travel by bus back to Matamata for the return journey back north on the heritage train. Please note there is some amount of walking involved in the tour around “Hobbiton”, so passengers need to be fairly active.
Arrival Option 2:
Walk the short distance into the main street of Matamata and have lunch at one of the many lunch bars or cafes, before meeting back at the Matamata Railway Station, boarding a bus and travelling the short distance to the Firth Tower Museum and experience the beautifully restored buildings and activities.
Arrival Option 3:
Walk the short distance into the main street of Matamata and have lunch at one of the many lunch bars or cafes, before meeting back at the Matamata Railway Station, boarding a bus and travelling the short distance to Rich Hill Stud, one of NZ’s most famous and leading Thoroughbred Horse Stud’s. You will be treated to the wonderful hospitality that this farm has to offer and be shown some of the world’s best stallions including one who won the Melbourne Cup!
Arrival Option 4:
Spend the spare time in the lovely Waikato Township and enjoy the shopping and hospitality that Matamata has to offer.
