The GVR is always a popular location for school groups to visit for educational purposes. Railways played a vital role in the development of New Zealand from the 1860's, particularly in opening up the country and the linking of isolated communities before the advent of decent roads and the motor vehicle. At GVR you will find an accurate and "live" representation of many aspects of New Zealand's great railway history.
During the charter, your group will be guided through the history of the Railway and the Society by our Tour Guide. A feature of the visit will be a tour through our Engineering Workshops where you will be able to see up close the skills and equipment required to restore and operate the magnificent steam locomotives and other rolling stock. Our Tour Guide will happily answer any questions your group may have.
Your group will also have the opportunity to get up close to the locomotive and talk to the crew who are operating it.
Our Glenbrook Station complex is ideally suited for up to 12 school buses, and features a large picnic and playground area. We have toilets (wheelchair-accessible) available onsite as well as a large carpark. We have a Gift Shop which may be opened if requested for souvenirs and publications.
Our train can accommodate 300 or more persons at any one time.
