Carriage History:

Built at the Newmarket Workshops, Auckland as a two compartment first class carriage seating 33 passenger's, with a lavatory in the centre of the carriage. It weighed in at 18ton 13cwt.

Built as a gas lit carriage it was fitted with electric lighting in March 1927, and steam heating was fitted at Otahuhu workshops in October 1935. When reweighed it was around 2 tons heavier after the addition of the steam heat and electric lighting equipment. Weighing 20ton 7cwt.

In June 1947 newer type draw gear of the Janney Yoke type was fitted replacing the older through style old draw gear previously used.

In January 1954, A 1161 was reconfigured as a second class carriage, seating 45 passengers. Then in December 1961 it was down graded from mainline duties to a second class Auckland suburban carriage with no lavatory, this reduced its weight by 1 ton to around 19ton 13cwt.

From what can be ascertained it seems as if A 1161 was always based in and around the Auckland area.

Preservation:
In 1973 A 1161 was withdrawn from service and subsequently acquired by the Railway Enthusiast Society
for use on the Glenbrook Vintage Railway.

As part of the then theme on the GVR all carriages were named after great canoes which brought the Maori
from Hawaki to the shores of New Zealand, and A 1161 was named Maatatua. It has recently been
refurbished and returned to service as A 1161 in the new red livery of the Glenbrook Vintage Railway.
