Carriage History:

Built at the Newmarket Workshops, Auckland as a two compartment first class 'Main Trunk' carriage seating 30 passengers, with an end lavatory. It weighed in at 20ton 15cwt.

As built AA 1494 was allocated to Wellington, and in May 1935 was transferred to Auckland.

In January 1925 AA 1494 was converted to a 24 berth sleeping car with 2 compartments sleeping 12 in each.
Weight was then 20ton 8cwt.

Then in November 1927 AA 1494 was converted to a two compartment centre lavatory first class carriage seating 30 passengers.

From 1937-38 was used on Auckland to New Plymouth Expresses.

In July 1941 was altered to a Otahuhu workshops, Auckland to a second class suburban carriage with the fitting of scarrett 'flip over' seats. Seating was available for 51 passengers.
In October 1976 AA 1494 was withdrawn from service and was offered to the RES.

On 22 October 1976 AA 1494 was delivered to the Glenbrook Vintage Railway. It has been fully refurbished to mainline standards to allow it to travel on the KiwiRail network.

The Traffic Monitoring System number or TMS was added in preservation.

All carriages in the RES fleet are in Ways and Works yellow with brown trim.
