Carriage History: 
Built at the Addington Workshops, Christchurch as a single compartment, second class carriage, seating 56 passengers, with a lavatory in the centre of the carriage. It weighed in at 27ton 5cwt. Transferred to the Wellington District from Christchurch in July 1969.

A 1991 along with 1968 and 2012 were overhaul at Addington workshops prior to transfer to Wellington. 
At some point transferd to Auckland, then in 1972 A 1991 was transferred back to Wellington for use as a suburban carriage. 

During use in suburban service A 1991 was given the Traffic Monitoring System identification of A56785. 

In 1981 when a guards compartment was fitted the carriage became AL56037. 


AL56073 was withdrawn from service in 1996 and purchased by the Railway Enthusiast Society for use on Mainline Excursions on the KiwiRail network. In 2009 AL56073 was sent for refurbishment to the Hutt workshops, Wellington, it returned to the GVR in 201X, and is undergoing internal fit out. 

All carriages in the RES fleet are in Ways and Works yellow with brown trim.
