Glenbrook Vintage Railway is a heritage steam train railway located 50 minutes south of Auckland city, just out of Waiuku. Opened in 1977, GVR has formed itself into a major tourist attraction for the Franklin District, coming from humble beginnings in the late 1960’s to the major enterprise that it is today. Over 100 volunteers lend their time to keep the magic of steam trains alive for today’s generation to enjoy, people from all ages and backgrounds, people who are truckers, accountants, shop assistants, all walks of life, all come together to give over 30,000 people annually a experience of a lifetime.

GVR was set up back in 1969 by the Railway Enthusiasts Society (Parent body of the GVR) in order to preserve a country branch line with the intention of saving some historic steam trains for posterity, once the land had been purchased between Glenbrook and just outside Waiuku work began on clearing the massive amount of gorse and weeds that had grown up on the railway tracks since the line was closed by the Government Railways in 1967. Over the next 8 years thousands of man hours was spent on restoring the track, and restoring surplus suitable carriages and locomotives purchased from the Government Railways, sheds where also erected to house these vehicles. The constant fund raising and shear hard work done by the volunteers was rewarded in 1977 on Labour Weekend in October when the first official train arrived at Glenbrook station to open the railway for business.

Today the GVR carries 30,000 people each operating season, it has been recognised as the leading steam train attraction in New Zealand, popular weekends throughout the year include - Day Out With Thomas, The Lego Show, and Santa Specials.

Over Labour Weekend (21st, 22nd, 23rd October) GVR will be celebrating its 40 years of rich history, from the first passenger in 1977, to the 1.3 millionth in 2017. The sights and sounds of steam trains are being kept alive by the hard work and dedication of the volunteers of Glenbrook Vintage Railway, so that future generations can marvel at the wonders of technology of years gone by.
