Built at the Newmarket Workshops, Auckland as a two compartment first class carriage seating 33 passenger's, with a lavatory in the centre of the carriage. It weighed in at 18ton 17cwt.
Built as a gas lit car it was fitted with electric lighting in March 1928 this changed its weight to 20ton 5cwt.
A 1222 was initially allocated to the Wanganui Region and used on the Wanganui to New Plymouth expresses in the 1930's. In November 1961 A 1222 was transferred to Auckland for service.
In November 1961, A 1222 was reconfigured as a second class carriage, seating 45 passengers.
Preservation:
In 1973 A 1222 was withdrawn from service and subsequently acquired by the Railway Enthusiast Society for use on the Glenbrook Vintage Railway.
Either in NZR or GVR times it has been rebuilt as a longitudinal seat carriage and used for birthdays and on a number of charter trains. As part of the then theme on the GVR all carriages were named after great canoes which brought the Maori from Hawaki to the shores of New Zealand, and A 1222 was named Te Arawa.
When originally refurbished for service on the GVR A 1222 was painted in the standard livery of Ways and Works yellow with brown trim. In 199X A 1222 was refurbished and returned to service as in the new standard red livery of the Glenbrook Vintage Railway.
