Jiggers

Jigger rides are very popular attractions for visitors to the GVR, and our railway is one of very few places where one can experience these unique machines. There is a choice of two types as listed below. They operate from Glenbrook Station once the steam train has departed. Tickets can be purchased from our Ticket Office on the day.

Motor Jigger

These vehicles (also kno wwn as motor trolleys) were designed and built by New Zealand Railways (NZR)
for track workers, bridge maintainers, signals staff and other staff who used them to travel to the work site with their tools to inspect and maintain the railway infrastructure where there was no road access. GVR now offers visitors to the railway a chance to experience this wonderful item of railway heritage by taking an exhilarating 4km round trip to Morley Road level crossing and return. These trips take place when the steam train has departed from Glenbrook Station. Suitable for all ages.

Hand Jigger

This historic machine dates from the early 1900's, and was a forerunner of the motor jigger. Again, this jigger has been lovingly restored to operating condition for the public to enjoy. Passengers who ride on it also enjoy an interactive experience (You have to provide the power!). The hand jigger is operated within the Glenbrook Station complex once the steam train has departed. Age or height restrictions for children may apply.

Note: Jiggers may not operate due to adverse weather conditions, volunteer non-availability, or during Special Events.

Our Glenbrook Station complex opens at 10am and closes at 5.30pm. The first train departs at 11am and thereafter at 90 minute intervals, subject to change due to operational requirements and may also vary during Special Events. The return trip takes approximately one hour.

~ Each trip features a 15 minute stop at our Workshops where passengers can inspect the restoration projects in progress, and other equipment on display

Our volunteer staff are on hand to assist if needed, their period uniforms adding to your “vintage” experience.

Old-style cardboard tickets are purchased at the Ticket Window, and souvenirs, “Thomas the Tank Engine” merchandise, and books are available in the Bookstall. A variety of snack food, ice cream and drinks is available at the Refreshments counter. Dine at the tables provided, or enjoy our shady picnic area featuring picnic tables and childrens play equipment.

Wheelchair-accessible toilets are available, complete with baby-changing tables, and parking for the disabled is adjacent to the station platform. The train is also wheelchair-accessible.

A distant whistle will herald the imminent arrival of the steam train, which always provokes great excitement among the children. The excitement will build as the train glides to a stop at the platform and is prepared for the next departure.

Before boarding, you may wish to inspect the steam engine (the driver will be happy to answer any questions)

You may board the train at any time, and settle into the immaculate wood-panelled carriages, in anticipation of your nostalgic journey.

Your journey covers 15 kilometres from Glenbrook to Victoria Avenue in historic Waiuku, and return, and takes approximately 65 minutes including a 10 minute stop at Victoria Avenue station and a 15 minute stop at Pukeoware Workshops during the return leg from Victoria Avenue, to allow viewing of restoration projects and also other railway equipment.

At Victoria Avenue, you may wish to alight from the train, explore Waiuku, and catch a later train back to Glenbrook.
Note that the last train departing Victoria Avenue for Glenbrook is at 4.00pm.

The journey may be taken in reverse, joining the train at Victoria Avenue and returning there on a later train. Tickets for this option must be purchased on arrival at Glenbrook, prior to the return journey.

You are welcome to move through the train to select the carriage that most suits you, but please exercise caution, and ensure your children are under your control. Also ensure that when the carriage windows are raised, BOTH catches are securely engaged

Don't hesitate to ask questions of the guard, they will be only too happy to provide information

As there are no toilets on board the train, or at Victoria Avenue station, please plan your trip carefully. Toilets are available at Glenbrook (including wheelchair-accessible). Public toilets are available in Waiuku township.

We hope you enjoy your time at Glenbrook Vintage Railway!  If you do, please tell others; if you don't, please tell us so that we can make improvements.
